Preparations underway for the fourth annual School is Cool event set for August 3rd

It’s summer but it is not too early to start preparing for school in the fall. And with that in mind, preparations are underway for the fourth annual School is Cool back-to-school event set for August 3rd at Harvey Convention Center and the Tyler Rose Garden Center. #SchoolisCool offers Smith County families an opportunity to prepare for the new school year. The event is set for 4:30-7:30pm.

The event is sponsored and hosted by the Tyler Area Business Education Council, City of Tyler, and Tyler ISD.

LaToya Young, chairwoman of the event and part of the Business Education Council, said organizers are recruiting vendors and contributors for the event with “the main purpose of  preparing the community as well as parents for the upcoming school year. We want to have their questions answered and get them as prepared as possible.”

The event features more than 100 vendors and booths, including vision and dental screenings. The event also has offered complementary haircuts and immunizations, but Young said organizers currently are in negotiations to continue offering these services.

One change this year will be the inclusion of several informative presentations as a way for vendors to share more in-depth information with families. For instance, she said information will be available regarding home ownership and what is involved in beginning the home buying process.

“We want both parents and children to have a productive school year and start out in a positive way,” Young said.

Last year’s event drew more than 3,000 people, and the organization was able to hand out almost 2,000 backpacks full of school supplies to families.  Young said area residents can donate backpacks and schools supplies, and drop-off locations for collections will be announced soon. The assembly of backpacks will begin in July.

Those who are interested in hosting a vendor booth at the event can download an application at Those interested in volunteering at the event can call volunteer coordinator Yolanda Prince at (903)531-1100.
