This Month at the Library: American Girl Club, Family Movies, and Teen Tuesdays

The Tyler Library will host many exciting summer events. The Tyler Library is located at 201 S. College, Downtown Tyler. Most events are free. The Library is open Monday-Thursday 10am-7pm, Friday 10am-6pm, Saturday 10am-5pm, and Sunday 1-5pm. For more info call (903)593-7323 or go to tylerlibrary.com.

Children

Storytimes

All storytimes will be in Taylor Auditorium.

  • Leeme un Cuento/Read to Me Storytime (children 3-6) is on Mondays at 10:30am.
  • Lap & Play Time (babies up to 18 months) features stories, songs, and playtime with developmental toys at 9:30am.
  • Toddler Explore Storytime (children under age 3) is on Wednesdays at 10:30am.
  • Read Aloud Crowd Storytime (children 3-6 years old) is on Thursdays at 10:30am.

October 7th (10:30am) – American Girl® Book Club – Learn about Maryellen Larkin, an American Girl from 1954. If you would like to help plan the event by finding a game, craft, or activity that Maryellen would have enjoyed doing or by providing a snack contact Mrs. Gray at (903)593-7323 or emailing LGray@TylerTexas.com. The American Girl Book Club meets the first Saturday of each month from September to May.

October 7th (2-4pm) – LEGO® Block Party – Children ages 3 & up, bring your imagination for an afternoon of building and playing! LEGO® and Duplo Blocks are provided.

October 9th, 11th, and 12th (10:30am) – Fire Safety Storytime – In celebration of Fire Safety Week, firefighters from the Tyler Fire Department will visit the Library during storytime to read to children and teach them about fire safety. Children will have the opportunity to see a firetruck and learn about firefighting equipment. Families with children ages 0-3 should plan to attend on October 11th, while families with children ages 3 and up should plan to attend on October 12th.

October 21st (10:30am) – Family Movie Matinee – Families are invited to watch a fun feature length film in the library’s auditorium. Movie title, rating, and run time is available at TylerLibrary.com. Pillows, blankets, and carpet friendly snacks are welcome.

October 25th-31st – Dressed to Read – Children who visit the Library dressed in their Halloween costume anytime this week will receive a free book of their choice from the Dressed To Read Book Cart.

Teens

Teen Tuesdays

Every Tuesday (4:30-5:30pm) – Teen Tuesdays – If you are in Middle School or High School you’re in! The Library will have games, activities, and fun just for Teens. Earn volunteer hours completing special projects. Descriptions for weekly activities can be found at library.cityoftyler.org/Programs/Teens.

Adults

October 5th and 26th (10am-12 noon) – Needle Felting – These classes are geared toward beginners. Make your own pumpkins for household décor. Supplies provided.

October 6th (12 noon-2pm) – Author Meet and Greet – Meet author C.M. Bratton and get an autograph.

October 26th (10am) – Financial Literacy Class – Learn about financial literacy through a series of four classes sponsored by Tyler Public Library, Southside Bank, and Tyler Junior College. Topics include Starting a 401 (K), What to Know About Checking Accounts, How to Make and Stick to a Budget, and Tips for Paying Back Student Loans. Classes will meet weekly October 26th-November 16th.

October 26th (10am) – E-Book Bookclub – Join the E-Book Bookclub group in discussing this month’s read, “All the Single Ladies” by Dorethea Benton Frank. Don’t have an e-reader? Ask the information desk for details on how you can check one out. The E-Bookclub meets the last Thursday of every month.

October 31st (10am) – Club Read – Join the Club Read group in discussing this month’s read, “The Doll House” by Fiona Davis.

Every Monday (4-5pm) – Adult Coloring – Enjoy a relaxing and stress free session of coloring twice a month. All materials are provided.

Every Tuesday (10am-1pm) – Quilting Class – Learn the art of quilting at the Library. Class participants will complete individual and group quilting projects. Fabric and quilt patterns will be provided. Participants are asked to provide their own sewing machines, if you have them, scissors, and neutral or white thread. Every Tuesday (5:30-6:30pm) – Evening Meditation – Learn the practice of Heartfulness Meditation with Gayathri Kambhampati.

Every Wednesday (5:30pm) – Gentle Yoga – This gentle yoga class will be taught by Meagan Vrba who is certified in yoga, CPR, and first aid. You must bring your own yoga mat.

October 6th and 20th (1-3pm) – Veteran’s Movie – Join this biweekly screening of movies presented especially for our veterans. This free event is held the first and third Friday every month.

Every Saturday (11am-12 noon) – Crochet Classes will be held in the 3rd floor Internet Center Workroom. These are free classes. Learn to crochet with Library staff and volunteers. All materials are provided. All experience levels are welcome.
