Three Days of Making, Creating and Learning at the Discovery Science Place

Discovery Science Place is located at 308 N. Broadway Ave., Downtown Tyler. DSP is open Tuesday-Friday 10am-5pm, Saturday 10am-5pm, Sunday 1-5pm, and closed on Mondays.

Tickets are $8 for adults (ages 13 and up), $6 for children (ages 2-12), $6 per person for seniors (65 and up), $5 per person for active military (must provide ID), and children under 2 are free.

Spring Break Camps

Spring Break Camps at Discovery Science Place are planned for March 12th-16th. Each day has a different theme, and campers are divided into two age groups based on school grade: K-3rd and 4th-6th. Sign up for just one day, or up to all five. Camps are from 10am-4pm each day, and extended care is available from 7:30am-5:30pm. Cost is $30 per day per camper and $25 for each additional child (same family).

March 12th (10am-4pm) – Make: Structure Camp – Campers will focus their energy into construction in this day long camp. How strong can you make your spaghetti tower and how well can you defend your fort against attack via flying boulders? Come find out.

March 13th (10am-4pm) – Space Quest Camp – Blast off into a universe of exciting activities. Rockets will launch, planets will be discovered, and habitats will be constructed, so do not miss this camp.

March 14th (10am-4pm) – Wild About Animals Camp – The Discovery Science Place goes to the birds (and other creatures) with cool crafts and awesome animal displays. Special thanks to the Caldwell Zoo for assisting us on this “Wild” camp day.

March 15th (10am-4pm) – Art & Science Camp – Art and science collide as campers discover that science can be beautiful. Campers will create art and jewelry using the power of the sun, as well as learn about natural pigments that can be used to paint with. Guest artist Lisa Horlander will visit to assist us.

March 16th (10am-4pm) – Kitchen Chemistry Camp – favorite theme of campers. Slime, Oobleck, Carbon Dioxide rockets and more! The best part of this camp is that all activities can be repeated at home with parental help.

Other Events

April 7th (10am-5pm) – 25th Anniversary Spring Celebration Day – Join us as we celebrate the 25 Years of Discovery! More information to come about this day-long celebration.

April 14th (9am-2pm) – Girl Scouts Citizen Science Session – Girls will practice the scientific method by doing a citizen science project focused on the outdoors! Registration closes on Friday, April 13th.

April 28th (9am-5pm) – Tyler Maker Faire – The Tyler mini-Maker Faire has been attracting makers, inventors, techies, artisans, hackers and more to the Discovery Science Place for a fun-filled day of making and hands-on exploration since 2013. Each year the faire attracts well over a thousand makers, performers, and visitors to a family-friendly, educational, and entertaining day called by Make Magazine “the greatest show, and tell, on Earth!”

DATE CHANGES!! April 2nd: Glass Rec. Center, Summer Camp Registration Open

Glass Recreation Center Summer Camp Registration to Open April 2nd 

Summer time is almost here and some may need a place for their children to spend the day. Those should look no further!! The Glass Recreation Center (GRC) Summer Camp is the ideal day camp for children looking for a variety of things to do on any given summer day. GRC fun-filled summer events will include sports, games, swimming, arts and crafts, education enrichment program, special events, field trips and much more for children ages 6 to 10.

Registration opens on April 2 and camp will start Tuesday, June 5th through August 3rd; Mondays through Fridays from 9am to 3pm.

A mandatory meet and greet for parents will be held Monday, June 4th at 6pm at Glass Recreation Center, 501 W. 32nd St. This meeting will outline behavior guidelines, introduce camp leaders and pass out the camp activity calendar. Parents will be able to pay the remaining balance.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided by the East Texas Food Bank Summer Food Program.

The cost to participate is $100 per child for the entire summer. Field trip fees are additional if child attends. A partial payment is due to register child. (There will be no refunds after payment has been made and all fees must be paid before June 6.) Space limited to 100 kids.

March 29th: Hop to the 17th Annual Twilight Easter Egg Hunt

Gather your families and friends and hop to the Tyler Parks and Recreation’s 17th Annual Twilight Easter Egg Hunt on Thursday, March 29 at Lindsey Park located at 12557 Spur 344 W. The fun begins at 6:15 p.m. and Easter egg hunts kick off at 6:45pm on the softball fields.

The egg hunts are categorized by age groups: children with special needs at 6:45pm.; children ages 3 to 5 at 7 pm; ages 6 to 8 at 7:20pm.; and ages 9 to 10 at 7:45pm. Hunt times are subject to change depending on circumstance. Only one group at a time will be allowed to hunt. Parents will only be allowed on the field with the special needs hunting group. Lights will remain on during all hunts.

Admission is free, but children should bring their own Easter baskets. The entertainment includes an appearance by the Easter Bunny so bring your cameras to capture the moment. There will also be karaoke, vendor booths and other fun activities. Concessions will be available for a fee.
