Get Certified as a Texas Wine Specialist at Kiepersol Winery’s Salt Kitchen

Dr. Russ Kane, “aka Doc Russ, Texas Wineslinger – the man that wrote the book on Texas wine,” will hold a Texas Wine Certification class at Kiepersol Winery’s Salt Kitchen Classroom, 4120 FM 344 E in Tyler, Monday-Tuesday, September 24th-25th, 5-9pm each night.

“The Specialist of Texas Wine” is a first-of-its-kind program that offers a comprehensive series of classes featuring the unique wines and wine regions of Texas. Never before has there been a wine program with specific classes focused solely on Texas!

The guided tastings will include over 24 Texas and benchmark wines. Tastings will include a range of grape varieties and blends originating from northern Europe (France and Germany), the Mediterranean (Italy, S. France, Spain, Portugal) and hybrid wines from Texas and other American appellations. These tastings will help students understand the distinctions of wines from selected Texas regions and grape varieties and their attributes versus their counterparts in the American and global wine world.

The program exposes students to unique landscapes, geology, and growing conditions of the major wine regions in Texas: Texas High Plains, Texas Hill Country, Texoma, Escondido Valley, and Davis Mountains AVAs, as well as non-AVA regions of East Texas and Gulf Coast. This learning and tasting intensive program features important topics critical to the success of today’s wine professionals and savvy consumers that are looking for the best wines and wine values that Texas offers.

Once through this class, you will be able to discuss Texas wines, their history and commercial development with friends and clients, select, purchase and order Texas wines with authority, and know their appellation of origin in the state (or not), understand the evolution of the grape varieties in Texas and how they match up to the climate and other benchmark wine regions of the world.

While the course is led by Dr. Kane, students will also hear from guest presenters actively involved in the Texas wine industry to provide practical insights and experiences on grape growing and winemaking in Texas.

This “Specialist of Texas Wine Class: Level 1” cost is $242.50 (for certification students) and $174.60 (for auditing students). The fee covers the class (8 hours of lectures), PDF copies of slides and supplemental materials (downloadable from Dropbox), a copy of Russ Kane’s book “The Wineslinger Chronicles: Texas On The Vine” selected for the Grover E. Murray Studies in the American Southwest book series, as well as includes wine tasting of both Texas and non-Texas benchmark wines. This class is organized by The Texas Wine School.
