Theatre TJC presents a new spin on classical Greek tragedy, ‘Antigone,’ April 2-5

For its next production, Theatre TJC is going Greek with “Antigone,” a new play by TJC theatre professor and director Denise Weatherly-Green, based on Sophocles’ original work, written around 441 B.C.

The production runs 7:30 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, April 2-5, in Jean Browne Theatre, located on the TJC central campus.

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for seniors ages 65 and up, students and active military. The TJC Box Office hours are 3-5:30 p.m. weekdays in the Rogers Palmer Performing Arts Center. For reservations, call 903-510-2212. Tickets are also available online at TJC.UniversityTickets.com.

The Greek tragedy unravels the tale of Antigone, an unconventional heroine who pits her beliefs against the King of Thebes in a bloody test of wills that leaves few unharmed.

As Antigone mourns her brothers who have murdered each other in a civil war, she must decide if she will sacrifice her life to balance the scales of justice. Her victorious brother is posthumously exalted; her treasonous brother is left unburied by order of King Creon, Antigone’s uncle and adversary. Antigone deliberately defies the king’s edict and buries her traitorous brother, igniting a devastating chain of events and thrusting urgent questions of justice to the forefront.

Cast: Bailey Thornburg of Melissa, Antigone; Kyler Littlejohn of Union Grove, as Ismene; Jay Stevens of Forney, Sentry; Kayden Loudermilk of Forney, King Creon of Thebes; Amaya Perkins of Kaufman, Eurydice; Rylan Barr of Industrial, Haemon; Halle Dunn of Yucaipa, California, Tiresias; Johnny Rood of Tyler, Male 1; Preston Clark, Paris, Male 2; Emily Titlow, Cushing, Female 1; Abbey Gipson, Tyler, Female 1; and Abby Newsom, Longview.
