About the development of hunting in Latvia #003

The basis for the further development of the hunting economy of the republic is the comprehensive expansion of the forage base in the forest. Not a little has been done in this direction in recent years. For example, if in 1956 there were no crops of clover and perennial grasses on the land at all, then in 1960 they amounted to over 39 hectares, there were 280 feeders and salt pans, it became about 1000, there were no plantings of potatoes and jerusalem artichoke in 1956, and in 1960 58 hectares were planted with these crops. Hay harvesting over the same years increased from 68.5 tons to 273.2 tons, harvesting of twig feed — from 29 thousand brooms to 128 thousand, etc. In addition, 5 hectares of land have been planted with Canadian rice for wild ducks. Grain waste is purchased to feed animals and birds. Continuing to expand the forage base is the primary task set by hunters and forestry workers.

The issue of hunting management in the forests of the republic has come up. It is unacceptable that animals cause damage to forestry and agriculture due to the lack of natural food. It is necessary to lay willow plantations for moose, expand crops of clover, fodder cabbage, jerusalem artichoke potatoes, grain mix, etc.

The performance of these works will not only expand the possibilities of sports hunting for workers, but also serve as an additional source of delicious, high-quality meat. After all, a lot of meat from moose, wild boar, roe deer, hares and feathered game is already harvested in the Latvian SSR — up to 375 tons per season.

Despite intensive shooting, the increase in the number of large hunting animals in the republic is quite high and amounts to 11 percent for moose, 14 percent for deer, 11 percent for roe deer and 37 percent for wild boars. Prerequisites are being created for an increase in the shooting rates of these animals in the near future, especially wild boars, whose reproduction already has to be limited.

The fulfillment of shooting standards is achieved by properly staged collective hunting. In the lands assigned to the collective, hunting is allowed only on hunting permits and after prior notification of the forester or the foreman technician (gamekeeper) of the relevant site. These people, as a rule, accompany hunters and monitor their compliance with hunting rules. Forest guards also accompany hunters who have permits to shoot limited animals (deer, elk, roe deer, wild boar) and birds (grouse, grouse). The destruction of wolves, in addition to monetary bonuses, is also stimulated by the issuance of licenses for shooting large animals in state hunting farms. The best hunters are given the rights of public hunting inspectors. The most energetic retired employees of the state forest protection are also involved in this work.

Our practice shows that the level of hunting does not depend on the amount of monetary or material allocations. The decisive role here is played by the energy, honesty and hard work of the people who are called upon to run the hunting farm and lead the NM. Where people treat their work with love, with a spark, observe communist principles, work and live not only for today, but also looking into tomorrow, business is reliably going uphill.
